Ludność masowo zaczęła przenosić się na stacje kosmiczne, które stały się dla Ziemian nowym domem. Mało kto z tego pokolenia postawił stopę na planecie. Jednak życie w sztucznym, sterylnym klimacie, prawdopodobnie stało się przyczyną wykształcenia u młodych dzieci rzadkiej, śmiertelnej choroby zwanej Syndromem, która powodowana jest brakiem naturalnego środowiska: czystego powietrza, świeżej wody. Jednym z chorych jest ośmioletni syn Devon Adair, Ulysses. Aby ratować dziecko, a także setki innych umierających, oraz aby stworzyć dla ludzkości nową, lepszą przyszłość, Devon staje na czele ekspedycji mającej na celu kolonizację odległej planety o podobnym do ziemskiego klimacie - G-889. Pomimo przeszkód ze strony komórek rządowych, które starały się nie dopuścić startu, wyprawa dochodzi do skutku po wcześniejszym od planowanego odlocie. 22 lata później statek, który przewozi kolonistów, osiąga cel swojego przeznaczenia. Lądowanie nie kończy się jednak szczęśliwie - w wyniku sabotażowej akcji odłamu rządowego, transportowiec zostaje uszkodzony. Garstka, która wyszła cało z katastrofy, ląduje na planecie jedynie z pozostałościami sprzętu. Mają dwa lata, aby dotrzeć do Nowej Pacyfiki - miejsca, gdzie planowo miała powstać kolonia. Rozpoczyna się wędrówka przez kontynent, szybko jednak okazuje się, że planeta wcale nie jest tak opuszczona, jak z początku sądzono... |
